Join us every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 2pm AT for our X-Chem Live streaming videos on our YouTube channel. Our live streams will include a variety of STEM demonstrations and activities that you can do later at home. Live videos will include a moderated typed chat - signing into YouTube with a Google account is required in order to participate in the live chat, however it is not necessary to watch the live streams.
ACTIVITY KITS PROGRAM
NOTE: As of Sept 1st, these kits are currently not available!
We currently have a variety of coding and science activity kits for at-home STEM learning. Activity kits will require registration and will be made available with non-contact delivery by X-Chem staff. At this time, activity kits will only be available to those within a 15km radius of the Town of Antigonish. Kits will be delivered/picked up on Wednesdays between 1-4pm. All kits will be prepared following COVID-19 protocols and guidelines set by StFX and Nova Scotia Health. Our COVID-19 safe operating procedure for our activity kit program can be found here.
Coding activity kits will contain X-Chem coding equipment that must be returned. They will be available for 1 week at a time, and will require a refundable deposit of $60 (cheque or cash only) upon delivery. The deposit will be returned when the coding equipment is picked back up by X-Chem staff. Note: Participants must be at home at the time of delivery to ensure the kit is received!
Binary Code Bracelet or Keychain Activity Kits
Recommended age level: 5+. This kit will teach the concept of binary code, which is the language computers use to read and process information. Learn about binary code by using UV beads and coloured beads to spell your child's initials in binary numbers. Choose between a bracelet or a keychain for your kit. UV beads appear to be white, but change colour when exposed to UV light. These kits are being offered for free.

Recommended age level: 7-10 years old. These kits will include all littleBitsTM pieces required to build the flashlight (including a D battery) and instructions. littleBitsTM is an electronic prototyping platform for kids. littleBitsTM are small pieces that snap together through magnets to create circuits, showing how electronics work.

Sphero Mini Activity Kits
Recommended age level: 7-10 years old. These kits will include a Sphero Mini, USB charge cord, small accessories kit, and instructions. Note: An Apple or Android tablet or phone is required, as well as a USB charge block or charging device. Sphero Mini is a small app-enabled robot the size of a ping pong ball. Use the drive, slingshot, and tilt options on the app to steer the Sphero Mini through obstacle courses as well as play games such as bowling, curling, and more.

Turing Tumble Activity Kits
Recommended age level: 7+. These kits will include the complete Turing Tumble set along with instructions/activity book containing 60 easy to follow puzzles. No other technology/equipment is required. The goal of each puzzle is to build a computer that completes a particular objective. Science-themed activity kits will be available for the month of August. Kits will contain supplies required for multiple activities. Instructional videos will also be available for several activities in each kit. These kits do not need to be returned and may require a small fee depending on the contents of the kit
Science Kit #1
Recommended age level: 5-7 years old. This kit contains forestry and astronomy themed activities. Forestry activities include leaf chromatography and a neighbourhood scavanger hunt. Astronomy activities include "fizzing planets", creating a constellation flashlight, and making a moon key chain. Some parent/guardian assistance is recommended. Required materials: scissors, tape. NO FEE REQUIRED!

Science Kit #2
Recommended age level: 8-10 years old. This kit contains a variety of activities with a food science and anatomy theme. Activities include learning about carbohydrates, vitamins and antioxidants, as well as learning about the human body by making a noodle skeleton and lung model. Required materials: an apple, tape. NO FEE REQUIRED!

Science Kit #3
Recommended age level: 7-12 years old. This kit contains a variety of activities. Activities include learning about the water cycle with Biome in a Baggie, how carbon dioxide is produced by making a lava lamp and homemade bath bombs, as well as learning about the components of human blood by making blood slime. Required materials: water, measuring spoons. NO FEE REQUIRED!
