Immersion Service Learning - Important Dates 2017-2018

September & October If you intend on applying to the Immersion Service Learning Program you should APPLY FOR A PASSPORT RIGHT AWAY to avoid processing delays.
Sept -  Oct 13 On-line Applications accepted during this time. 
Friday, Oct. 6 4:00pm Deadline:  Bursary Application Form and supporting documents: one-page essay and a copy of government student loan assessments and/or bank loan statement (see Bursary Application Form for details).
Friday, Oct. 13 4:00pm Deadline:  On-line Application Form and two Reference Forms (per applicant).
Oct. 25- Nov 2 Interviews of student applicants by Faculty Leaders and Service Learning program staff.
Friday, Nov. 3 All applicants will be notified of acceptance and bursary status.
Nov. 6-7 Participants must meet with ISL staff to sign and submit Student Commitment Confirmation Form.  FIRST PAYMENT is due (non-refundable deposit)  on signing of Student Commitment Confirmation Form.
Thursday Nov. 9  Alternates advised of acceptance via e-mail.
Nov.10-14 Alternates meet with ISL staff to sign and submit Student Commitment  Confirmation Form.  FIRST PAYMENT is due (non-refundable deposit)  on signing of Student Commitment Confirmation Form.
Saturday, Nov 18 Mandatory afternoon workshop for all ISL participants Location/time: tba Topics:  roles and responsibilities, documents required, meeting arrangements, expectations and the setting of learning goals, IDS 305 course option, and possible group fundraising.  (snow date: November 25)
November & December  Group meetings with Faculty Leader.  Purpose of the meetings is to do some team-building, set goals, begin background research and reading on the geography, history, politics, and social conditions
Friday, Dec. 1 Deadline for non-refundable SECOND PAYMENT, signed Consent for Medical Treatment Form, signed Release & Liability Waiver, and copy of passport.
January & February Group meetings with Faculty Leader (minimum of 2 over this time)
Wednesday, Jan. 3 Deadline for non-refundable THIRD PAYMENT, Criminal Record Check, and Health Information Sheet.  Last date to submit copy of passport.
Saturday, Jan. 6 MANDATORY AFTERNOON WORKSHOP for Peru, Ecuador, Slovakia, Poland and Belize groups only.  Location/time: tba (snow date:  January 13). Ottawa group will make arrangements to meet with local L’Arche group for separate workshop
January 12 & 13 MANDATORY WORKSHOP for Guatemala group only.  Workshop will take place on a Friday (evening) and the following Saturday (all day).  Location: tba. Guatemala students are not required to attend the January 7 workshop (snow dates:  January 19 and 20).
Thursday, Feb 1 Deadline for non-refundable FINAL PAYMENT (excluding Belize)
Feb. 16— Feb. 25 Immersion experiences take place between these dates for SLOVAKIA, POLAND, ECUADOR, GUATEMALA, PERU and L’Arche Ottawa.
March 3 or 4 MANDATORY DEBRIEFING MEETING - Faculty Leader and students   meet to discuss returning to StFX following the ISL experience and prepare for Presentation Night (excluding Belize).  Group members decide location and time.
Wednesday, March 7 Group Reflection and Evening presentation session for all Immersion groups (except Belize). Group reflection session to be held prior to public presentations. Presentations should be 10 minutes in length.  Group members are expected to be present.  Location TBA, 5-9pm.
Wednesday, March 14 Belize non-refundable FINAL PAYMENT Due
Thursay, April 26-May 9 Immersion experience for Belize.  Please also note that travel dates take place over convocation weekend.
