Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the Workplace Diversity Questionnaire (WDQ). Despite the time year, Xaverians took time out of hectic end of year preparations to demonstrate their commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion on our campus. The Equity Advisory Committee and I were pleased to see a response rate of 50% for the WDQ.
The numbers reflect progress must be made if we are to uphold the goal of our strategic plan to create a faculty, staff and student body that reflects the wider Canadian and global community; however, we now have an understanding of who we are as an employee base and can begin to set into motion policies and practices to make StFX a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. Indeed, this information will action concrete changes on our campus, informing a new employment equity policy, the creation of standardized hiring procedures and will help contextualize ongoing efforts in equity education opportunities.
The data contained in the report should serve as a reminder to acknowledge and celebrate the diversity that already exists in our community. But, we must also dig deeper: whether it is ensuring we reflect on our own biases during the hiring process, noticing inequities in student interactions in the classroom, or finding ways to include students in research who traditionally have not had opportunities to so, we all have a role to play in creating an inclusive Xaverian community.
